Stefanik is fighting for the position in the Trump administration

House GOP Conference Chairwoman Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y., is seeking a role in the new Trump administration, Fox News Digital says.

Stefanik became the first congressional leader to support President-elect Trump's third White House campaign when she endorsed him in November 2022.

She is currently being discussed as a potential candidate for U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, two people familiar with such discussions told Fox News Digital.

One said Stefanik was “at the top of the list” of potential candidates.

However, for Stefanik and other House members vying for positions in the Trump administration, their chances depend heavily on where the majority lies in their chamber.

After victories in the Senate and the White House on election night, Republicans are optimistic about retaining the majority in the House of Representatives. However, the outcome will likely come down to a handful of close races in California, Arizona, Alaska and Oregon – and both sides are counting on narrow margins.

Replacing a House representative, even one from a district that heavily favors one party or the other, generally takes at least several weeks. Moreover, Republican leaders have already signaled that they do not want to waste time using their majorities in Congress to advance Trump's agenda.

It's not immediately clear who else is in the running for the role of U.N. ambassador.

As a senior member of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence and the House Armed Services Committee, Stefanik would be familiar with foreign affairs.

The New York Republican has been a vocal supporter of Israel since the Hamas terrorist attack on October 7th. She is also one of Trump's closest allies in Congress and has chaired several “Women for Trump” rallies and other events for him during the campaign.

Stefanik announced to House colleagues Thursday that she is running again for her current leadership role as chair of the House GOP Conference.

Stefanik's office did not respond to a request for comment from Fox News Digital.

One of Trump's former UN ambassadors in particular was Nikki Haley, who challenged the president-elect for the Republican nomination in 2024 before dropping out and ultimately endorsing him.

Fox News Digital was also told that another House member, retired Green Beret Rep. Mike Waltz, R-Florida, is being considered for a role in the Trump administration. Waltz is seen as a potential candidate for defense secretary, although Trump is also considering options from the private sector and others, Fox News Digital was told.

A stalemate is emerging in the final weeks of Congress before Trump's return to the White House

In addition to his military service before entering Congress, Waltz served as an adviser to Defense Secretaries Robert Gates and Donald Rumsfeld and spent time in the private sector as CEO of defense contractor Metis Solutions.

He currently serves, along with Stefanik, on the House Armed Services and Intelligence Committees and the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

Waltz's office did not respond to an email seeking comment.

Trump-Vance transition spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt told Fox News Digital when asked for comment on the potential appointments: “President-elect Trump will soon begin making decisions about who will serve in his second administration will serve. These decisions will be announced when they are made.”
