Teen LeClaire faces attempted murder and other charges after he allegedly hit another teen with his car

A 19-year-old man from Erie, Illinois, suffered serious injuries after he was intentionally run over by another teenager during an altercation at the TBK Bank Sports Complex in Bettendorf on Sunday morning, police said.

According to affidavits filed by Bettendorf police Detective Zachary Gish, the victim and 19-year-old Holden Van Smith of LeClaire had been communicating via social media. They agreed to meet at the sports complex for a physical fight.

Smith drove to the complex in a 2009 Toyota Prius.

When Smith saw the other teen standing in the complex's parking lot, he accelerated and intentionally hit the victim with his car, the affidavits said. The car then crashed through a fence and came to rest on the soccer field, causing significant damage to the fence and the field.

Smith fled the scene on foot, leaving the victim unconscious in the parking lot.

According to the affidavit, the victim was taken to Genesis Medical Center East in Davenport, where he was placed on a ventilator. The victim was then flown to OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria for treatment. His condition was not available Sunday evening.

Smith is charged in Scott County District Court with one count of attempted murder, a Class B felony under Iowa law that carries a sentence of 25 years in prison.

Smith is also charged with one count of willful assault resulting in serious bodily injury, a Class C felony punishable by 10 years in prison. He also faces one count each of second-degree criminal force and second-degree criminal coercion, each a Class D felony punishable by five years in prison.

Holden was being held without bail in the Scott County Jail Sunday evening on an attempted murder charge. Bails for the other charges totaled $20,000, cash or surety.

Holden is expected to make his first appearance on the charges Monday in Scott County District Court, when a judge will schedule a preliminary hearing and set bond.
