East Berne and Berne Fire are traveling to Orange County to battle the flames

On Monday, Orange County firefighters continued battling wildfires around Greenwood Lake. Now the firefighters from East Bern and Bern have answered the call for help. Twelve volunteers from both departments were deployed early Monday morning to help bring the wildfires under control.

Officials said about 1,800 hectares were affected and local structures were damaged. Fire officials say volunteers have been calling the station since Saturday, ready to help however they can.

“Our volunteer service is great. “Especially the Bern Fire District,” said Scott Duncan, chief of the East Bern Fire Department. “Everyone has a lot of members calling. I'm trying to help before we even get the mission list. That’s why our guys are always ready to help.”

The department will deploy two brush units and two wildland all-terrain vehicles. Chief Duncan also says volunteers are working 12-hour shifts and plan to remain in the area until 8 p.m. tonight.
