Jerry Jones: The Cowboys will not make any coaching changes during the season

Since purchasing the Cowboys in 1989, Jerry Jones has fired his head coach once during the season. He insists there won't be a second one this year.

Mike McCarthy, who is in the final year of his contract and will keep his job for at least the entire season, said Jones after the Cowboys' 34-6 loss to the Eagles.

“Yeah, I think so,” Jones said when asked if he would stick with McCarthy all season. “I don’t think we will make a coaching change during the season.”

Jones fired Wade Phillips in 2010 after a 45-7 loss to the Packers. It was the team's fifth straight loss and dropped the Cowboys to 1-7. Jason Garrett took over as interim coach and was hired for the full-time job in 2011.

On Sunday, the Cowboys lost their fourth game in a row, 3-6.

“I changed coaches during the season with Wade and always regretted it,” Jones said. “In fact, after two years I made a change with Chan Gailey. I regretted that. That's not enough. You have to give yourself a chance. I’ve had a lot more rope than that in my time.”

The Cowboys have a 45-31 record in McCarthy's five seasons, with a 1-3 postseason record. The expectation is that the Cowboys will allow McCarthy and the entire coaching staff's contracts to expire after this season and hire a new coaching staff without having to pay off any of the coaches.

“Mike is a great coach. “I think he’s a great coach and has and should have the opportunity to do better than what we’re playing right now,” Jones said. “As I said, I didn’t have a good experience with the coaching change in the middle of the season.”

Although Jones took the blame himself, he did not absolve the coaching staff of blame.

“Everyone has a stake in this,” Jones said. “We all know that the players play the game and we know that the coaches are closest to them and the people who hire the coaches are closest to them. “So everyone has a role in it. Everyone does it.

“By the way, it's no consolation when someone comes up here and says to the fans: 'It's my fault.' I'll take this one.' What does it make? This doesn't win the game. I’m not trying to put out that nonsense either.”

The Cowboys are 0-4 at home this season after being outscored 153-59 by the Saints, Ravens, Lions and Eagles. They heard boos from their fans for most of Sunday's game.

Jones admitted that he “has a lot to do with what we see.”

“There is no joy here without winning games and I am very sorry for our fans,” Jones said.
