'Wicked' Broadway stars Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth pose with movie stars at LA premiere

Broadway “Wicked” meets the current film “Wicked”.

Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth – stars of the original Broadway cast – joined Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande at the premiere of “Wicked” in Los Angeles on Saturday.

The group of four posed together on the carpet and hugged the stars in attendance, who were hidden outside among the stars of the 2003 Broadway musical. In the Wicked film, Grande and Erivo play the lead roles Glinda and Elphaba, respectively.

“I watched it with our 'Wicked' family and I screamed the whole time,” Chenoweth, who played Glinda in the original production of the film, said in a clip posted to the Wicked account's Instagram Story.

“I was so proud of her. She did it,” Chenoweth said of Grande. “And Cynthia, we knew she was going to be powerful, but the warmth and the heart that she brings. Just like Idina, it was perfect.”

In addition to Grande and Erivo, Wicked also stars Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible, Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero, Ethan Slater as Boq, Marissa Bode as Nessarose and Jeff Goldblum as the Wizard of Oz.

“Wicked: Part One” hits theaters on November 22nd. “Wicked: Part Two” is scheduled to hit theaters on November 21, 2025.

Menzel previously spoke on “Good Morning America” about “passing the torch” to the next generation of “Wicked” stars.

“We are very proud of what we helped create,” Menzel said at the 2024 Tony Awards in June.

“Seeing it grow through all these iterations and knowing that we're passing the torch to Cynthia and Ariana, who are in such wonderful hands and will do a wonderful job, and knowing that it will arrive.” “It’s special to reach an even larger audience than ever before and tell this story about real female empowerment,” said Menzel.

The 2003 Broadway production of “Wicked” won three Tony Awards, including a best actress nomination for Menzel.

According to a synopsis for the film, “Wicked” is “the untold story of the Witches of Oz,” including Elphaba, “a young woman who is misunderstood because of her unusual green skin and has yet to discover her true power.” Glinda, a “popular young woman, gilded by privilege and ambition, who has not yet discovered her true heart.”
