Lions wide receiver Jameson Williams will not fight the two-game suspension

Associated Press

ALLEN PARK, Mich. (AP) — Detroit Lions wide receiver Jameson Williams announced Thursday that he will accept a two-game suspension from the NFL for violating the league's policy on performance-enhancing substances.

Williams had said in a Monday report about the suspension that he had “no choice but to make light of it.” He issued a statement through his agent on Thursday confirming he had been informed of the suspension earlier this week.

“The news came as a complete surprise and I’m still trying to understand it,” Williams said.

“I don't take supplements or vitamins and I'm even overly cautious about taking over-the-counter medications. I have never taken anything to cheat or gain an unfair advantage. I understand that I am responsible for everything that goes into my body and I must take responsibility in this case.”

That means Williams will miss the Lions' (5-1) Sunday game against Tennessee (1-5) on Sunday and a road trip to NFC North rival Green Bay on Nov. 3.

Williams had a breakthrough season, a year after he was suspended four games for violating the NFL's gambling policy.

He has 17 catches for 361 yards and three touchdowns. In 12 games last season, he had 24 receptions for 354 yards and two touchdowns. He returned from knee surgery two years ago, played in six games and caught a 41-yard touchdown.

Williams, 23, is the first player in franchise history to have each of his first six touchdowns travel 30 yards or more.

Detroit drafted the former Alabama star with the 12th overall pick in 2022 and was patient with him. The team expected him to miss much of his rookie year due to a knee injury and has publicly supported him during last year's suspension and this week's reported punishment.
