Train vs. tractor-trailer accident near Mapleton

MAPLETON, N.D. (Valley News Live) – The Cass County Sheriff's Office responded to an accident involving a tractor-trailer and a train at an uncontrolled railroad crossing east of Mapleton, ND.

It happened around 8:15 a.m. at the intersection of 164th Avenue SE and County Road 10.

The initial investigation revealed the tractor-trailer was traveling south on 164th Avenue SE as it approached the railroad crossing. The driver drove through the intersection and a westbound BNSF train struck the trailer portion of the vehicle.

No one was injured and no train carriage derailed. According to the sheriff's office, the accident only caused property damage.

The 27-year-old driver of the semi-trailer was cited for failing to stop at a railroad crossing.

The Cass County Sheriff's Office reminds motorists that railroad crossings, especially uncontrolled ones, pose significant risks if proper precautions are not taken.
