Jordan Chiles says she won bronze medal amid 2024 Olympics controversy

But then her coaches submitted a request on her behalf. According to NBC Olympics, “A request is a verbal challenge to the score of an exercise.” It is followed by a written request that must be submitted before the end of the rotation. The challenge may only be advanced after the gymnast’s final score has been announced and before the end of the next gymnast’s routine.”

According to the International Gymnastic Federation (FIG), if the gymnast is the last to compete, there is a one-minute time limit that begins after the result is displayed on the scoreboard.

The evaluation question was about a split jump in Chile's routine called “Tour jeté full”.

“In the team qualifiers, in the team finals, she wasn’t recognized for that ability,” said Olympian and NBC gymnastics analyst John Roethlisberger said during the broadcast. “When the ability was first assessed, the judges gave her no credit for it. I spoke to Cecile And Laurent Landiher coaches, and they said, 'We thought she did a lot better here in the final.' So we thought we had nothing to lose, let's start an investigation.'”

After reviewing Chiles' routine, the judges accepted the investigation and gave Chiles 0.1 points for the vault, increasing her score to 13.766 for third place.

As a result, Chiles, who burst into tears of joy when she saw the results, won bronze. Meanwhile, Barbosu, who had already waved the Romanian flag to celebrate her own achievement, lost her place on the podium.
