SC Health Department. sets drug take-back day on Saturday

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WCSC) – The South Carolina Department of Health announced the second drug take-back day of the year for October 26th.

The purpose of the day is to clear out unused or expired medications and dispose of them properly. According to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency, nearly 50% of abused prescription drugs come from family and friends, including from home medicine cabinets.

“Clearing your medicine cabinet of unused or expired prescription medications twice a year is an easy way to protect yourself and your loved ones by removing all potentially harmful products from your home,” says Julia Horan, Prevention Coordinator at DPH.

Drug take-back day drop-off events will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. To find a collection point near you, visit DEA collection point search.

These locations collect tablets, capsules, patches, and other solid forms of prescription medications. Liquids (including intravenous solutions), syringes and other sharp objects, and illegal drugs are not accepted. The e-cigarettes and cartridges are accepted, but lithium batteries should be removed.
