The passenger who died in a tour bus crash on Interstate 490 last week has been identified as Tofazzal Hossain, 38, of Bangladesh. Hossain underwent surgery at Strong Memorial Hospital on Thursday but was pronounced dead that evening.

“Our thoughts are with his family during this difficult time,” said Monroe County Sheriff’s Deputy Brendan Hurley.

The tour bus, en route to Niagara Falls, overturned on I-490 in Chile shortly after 7 a.m. All 28 people on board were transported to area hospitals, with Hossain suffering the most serious injuries and the only fatality.

The accident occurred when the bus left the roadway at speeds in excess of 70 miles per hour, reentered the road, turned onto its side and slid about 200 yards in the westbound lanes before crashing around 7 p.m :10 a.m. stopped near Union Street, according to Chief Deputy Michael Fowler of the Monroe County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies have not yet determined a specific cause of the crash.

However, the driver was issued multiple tickets for drowsy driving, unsafe speed, unsafe lane changing and failure to wear a seatbelt.

His name has not been released.

The bus, operated by the Tribal Sun Bus Company of Massachusetts under the management of FlixBus, left New York City around midnight and made several stops along the highway, including one in Rochester shortly before the accident.
