Monday is Veterans Day, when Americans honor those who have served in the U.S. armed forces in the past and present — slightly different from Memorial Day, which, according to the Department of Veterans Affairs, focuses on honoring those who served in the died on duty.

The federal holiday invites Americans to thank those who have served in war and peacetime and to celebrate with parades and other festivities. Many businesses across the country also offer special offers and discounts as a thank you.

Here are some Veterans Day foodie deals you can find in California on Monday, as well as what's closed for the holiday.

Which restaurants near me offer Veterans Day discounts?

  • Applebee's: Veterans and active military, reservists and National Guardsmen can get a free meal from an exclusive Veterans Day menu at Applebee's on Monday.
  • BJ's Restaurant & Brewhouse: All current and former military members with a valid military ID will receive a free Chocolate Chunk Pizookie with no minimum purchase.
  • Broken Yolk Cafe: All veterans and active military members will receive a free small stack of pancakes on Monday. You must present an active or inactive military ID in store.
  • Buffalo Wild Wings: Current and former military members with a valid ID can get 10 free boneless wings and fries at Buffalo Wild Wings on Monday. The deal is good when you dine in, dine in, or order at the counter when ordering at a Buffalo Wild Wings Go location.

Why is Veterans Day celebrated on November 11th?

The federal holiday is celebrated on November 11th because an armistice agreement was signed between the Allies and Germany on November 11th, 1918 during the First World War. The date is considered the end of the war, although it officially ended when the Treaty of Versailles was signed months later, according to the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Are banks and post offices closed on Veterans Day?

Many banks are usually closed on public holidays. City National Bank, Bank of America, Chase, California Bank & Trust and Mechanics Bank are among the financial institutions celebrating Veterans Day, according to their holiday calendar.

According to the US Postal Service, all post offices will be closed on Veterans Day and there will be no regular mail service. Delivery and pickup schedules will resume on November 12th.

UPS said its pickup and delivery services will be available on Veterans Day and UPS stores will be open.
