Former New York Congressman Lee Zeldin has been selected to join President-elect Trump's administration as Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Trump confirmed the news in a statement on Monday afternoon, writing in part:

“Lee, who has a very strong legal background, was a true champion of America First policies. “He will ensure fair and rapid deregulatory decisions, implemented in a way that unlocks the power of American companies while maintaining power.” He will set the highest environmental standards, including the cleanest air and water on the planet.

Trump said Zeldin handled some “extremely difficult and complex situations” “brilliantly.” He said he's sure Zeldin “will quickly prove himself to be a great contributor!”

The New York Post was first to report that Trump had appointed Zeldin to head the EPA.

“It is an honor to join President Trump’s Cabinet as EPA Administrator,” Zeldin wrote on Do This While Protecting Access to Clean Air and Water.
