Alabama correctional officer arrested for stealing from inmate

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Ala. (WSFA) – An Alabama Department of Corrections corrections officer was arrested Tuesday and accused of exploiting his official position for personal gain, court documents show.

These documents show that Chief Correctional Officer William Todd took cigarettes, rolling papers and two gold chains from an inmate when he booked him into the Kilby Correctional Facility in Montgomery County.

The incident occurred on the evening of August 13th. According to records, Todd has since confessed to taking the items and giving the cigarettes and rolling papers to another inmate in exchange for a haircut.

The gold chains were found at Todd's home and returned to the incarcerated victim, who did not want to press charges because his property was returned.

ADOC officials said Todd resigned from office on Oct. 8 and was taken into custody after an arrest warrant was obtained Tuesday. He surrendered to the Montgomery County Detention Center, where he was held on $5,000 bail.

ADOC said the case will be referred to the Montgomery County District Attorney's Office for prosecution.
