Albany man charged with car theft

An Albany man is accused of stealing a car.

Officers stopped 47-year-old James R. Schmidt shortly after 12:15 p.m. on Monday, November 11th in the village of Ravena. Schmidt had made an illegal turn through a red light and the car had no license plates, according to the Albany County Sheriff's Office statement.

Schmidt allegedly stole the car from a company parking lot less than a mile away, police said.

Schmidt was charged with grand larceny, criminal possession of stolen property and aggravated unlawful operation. He was held in the Albany County Jail pending arraignment.
