A strong storm damages roofs and knocks down trees in Holly

A brief, intense storm damaged trees, downed utilities and possibly triggered a tornado in Holly Sunday evening.

The storm damaged the roofs of several buildings, downed trees and knocked down wires, Holly police said.

The damage occurred near Saginaw, Sherman, John and Church streets, but may have extended further, police said.

The National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm warning around 7 p.m. Sunday, with pea-sized hail and winds of up to 60 mph expected around 8 p.m. The warnings extended from northern Oakland County to the Thumb and west of the Thumb.

Holly police and firefighters continue to assess the damage and secure the area. The fallen trees and lines can lead to the closure of several streets.

Authorities have alerted utility companies to the damage to power lines.

Police are asking residents to avoid the area due to fallen trees and possible live power lines.

Residents wanting to assess the damage were warned to wait until dawn as it would be safer, police said.

“Please exercise caution if there is storm damage,” police said in a statement. “Stay safe, Holly!”
