Rays' Wander Franco, who is awaiting trial on sex abuse charges, was arrested after an armed incident, police said

Tampa Bay Rays infielder Wander Franco, who is awaiting trial on sex abuse charges in the Dominican Republic, was arrested in the country for his involvement in an armed standoff, police said Monday.

The incident occurred in the parking lot in San Juan de la Maguana, Dominican police spokesman Meregirdo Espinosa told the Associated Press. The baseball player was arrested on Sunday along with another man and another woman. According to police, two firearms were confiscated.

Espinosa said one of the guns probably belonged to Franco, who allegedly fought with the man for the woman's attention. The police did not want to say whether there were any injuries.

The Rays did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Fox News Digital.

Franco, 23, missed the entire 2024 season after being placed on the banned list for allegedly sexually abusing a 14-year-old girl. He was also accused of commercial exploitation of minors and human trafficking.

His trial is scheduled for December 12th.

Franco refused to speak to the media. He just said, “Everything is in God’s hands.”

In November 2021, he agreed to an 11-year, $182 million contract. He has not played a game since August 12, 2023.

On July 10, he was placed on the restricted list, stripping him of any pay he received while on administrative leave.
