The Wheel of Fortune contestants' unexpected answers in the bonus round are going viral

Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek's network of contributors

Wheel of Fortune Contestants sometimes make mistakes on the show, but a contestant's guesses during the bonus round puzzle the other night on the popular game show could tip the balance.

In the Friday, November 8th episode wheelCandidate Phoebe Huynh competed against Lisa Spruill and Jayden Johnson. Huynh, who said she moved to the United States when she was eight and learned English by watching the game show, edged out her opponents early on, winning the episode for $19,200. However, things got serious for Huynh during the bonus round.

Huynh chose “Food and Drink” as the category for the round and then selected the letters D, P, H and O. The two-word puzzle was “_ _ ND _ ED / _ R _ _ T” with ten seconds on the timer. Huynh first guessed “sun-dried grape,” then tried “sun-dried bird” again, and finally asked, “sun-dried cats?” when her time ran out.

Host Ryan Seacrest revealed the actual answer, quipping, “It's not a 'sun-dried bird,' it's a 'candied fruit.'” Huynh shrugged as she replied, “Well, I don't eat candied fruit,” to which Seacrest responded replied jokingly asked, “Do you eat sun-dried birds?” The contestant then replied, “No, I'm a vegetarian!” Seacrest later showed Huynh the prize she missed out on: $75,000.

Despite taking home a hefty $19,200 at the end of the night, Huynh's guesses during the bonus round went viral, and fans took to the video's comments section on YouTube to talk about it.

“I kept getting frustrated when she repeated 'Sundried.' “She knows there’s no ‘S’ and no ‘R’ in the first word,” one viewer pointed out. A second wrote: “SUN DRIED BIRDS? I didn't expect that,” while a third asked: “Sun dried cats? Needed a good laugh. How did she even win?” One user on Reddit added: “Truly the craziest bonus round I've ever seen live. 'I don't eat candied fruit!' was the icing on the cake.”

Seacrest took over the management for Wheel of Fortune in September, after longtime host Pat Sajak stepped down in June after 41 years. Sajak plans to return as host for another season Celebrity Wheel of Fortune which is scheduled to air in 2025.

Wheel airs weekdays on ABC.
