Brighthouse Life Insurance Announces Data Breach Due to Third-Party Incident | Console and partner, PC

On October 22, 2024, Brighthouse Life Insurance Company (“Brighthouse”) filed a notice of data breach with the Massachusetts Attorney General after discovering that confidential information provided to the Company was breached by a third party at Education Leaked were Benefit Consultants, LLC d/b/a Aviben. In this notice, Brighthouse states that the incident resulted in an unauthorized party gaining access to consumers' confidential information, including their names, dates of birth, social security numbers and pension contract numbers. After completing the investigation, Brighthouse began sending data breach notification letters to everyone whose data was affected by the recent data security incident.

What caused the Brighthouse Life Insurance data breach?

The data breach at Brighthouse Life Insurance was recently disclosed and more information is expected in the near future. However, Brighthouse's filing with the Massachusetts Attorney General provides some important information about what led to the breach. According to this source, on August 9, 2024, Brighthouse learned of a data security incident that occurred between June 28, 2023 and July 3, 2023. It appears that an administrator appointed by Brighthouse, DXC Technology Company, disclosed certain information to an unauthorized party. The unauthorized party was Education Benefit Consultants, LLC d/b/a Aviben (“Aviben”).

Subsequently, on February 22, 2024, Aviben experienced a data security incident that resulted in an unauthorized party being able to access confidential information of Brighthouse customers.

After learning that sensitive consumer data was accessible to unauthorized parties, Brighthouse Life Insurance reviewed the compromised files to determine what information was leaked and which consumers were affected. While the breached information varies from person to person, it may include your name, date of birth, Social Security number, and pension contract number.
