Man is accused of killing his girlfriend at a Redford Township motel

A Detroit man has been charged with murder after authorities say he fatally shot his girlfriend in the face at a Redford Township motel.

Shortly before 5 a.m. Saturday, Redford Township police were dispatched to a motel in the 9900 block of Telegraph Road for a reported shooting, Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy said in a news release.

Officers found the victim, identified as Valentina Colban, 37, of Detroit, with a gunshot wound to the face. She died from her injuries at a local hospital.

Worthy said Colban's friend, Jose Angel Oquendo-Torruella, 39, of Detroit, is accused of the shooting. A spokesman for Worthy's office said the suspect was still at the scene when police arrived.

He faces charges of second-degree murder and aggravated firearms crimes. If convicted, he could spend the rest of his life behind bars.

Oquendo-Torruella is expected to be arraigned at 11 a.m. Tuesday in 17th District Court in Redford Township.
