Costco had to recall 80,000 pounds of butter for the stupidest reason

This is butter stupidity!

Costco was forced to recall nearly 80,000 pounds of butter because the label failed to mention that the staple contains milk — and many social media users are rolling their eyes at the dairy dilemma.

The FDA issued an initial recall in October for 79,200 pounds of Kirkland Signature butter because of the undeclared allergen. Packages of both salted and unsalted Kirkland Signature Sweet Cream Butter list cream as an ingredient but do not contain an allergy warning that the butter “contains milk.”

The bizarre recall has caused confusion among many Internet users. The most common comment: “That’s butter.”

“80,000 pounds of Costco butter was just recalled because the label does not say it contains milk. It's butter. Newspaper articles tell people how to return the butter or dispose of it safely. It’s butter,” one person deadpanned.

One social media user joked: “Can you please dispose of it safely at my house? I have a lot of baking to do for the holidays.”

“Next they will recall beef that may contain beef,” chimed in another.

Another person quipped: “If the government has to tell you that butter is a dairy product then… well I can't help you, God I detest the government.”

“To be called 'butter,' it must contain milk or milk derivatives. Talk about useless government,” another unimpressed X user added.

While butter made by churning milk is low in lactose, people with a milk allergy are likely to react poorly to it. The CDC notes in the recall that milk is one of the major foods “responsible for the most serious allergic reactions in the United States.”

Angry social media users criticized the so-called problem and blamed Costco for the waste.

“Instead of wasting 80,000 pounds of butter, why not print labels that say “Contains Milk” and save perfectly good food? So wasteful,” one person said.

The FDA has not said whether the product caused illness or side effects.
