Caitlin Clark's boyfriend was mocked after the FOX show didn't show his coaching job, only his relationship

Caitlin Clark's boyfriend Connor McCaffery has started his tenure as an assistant coach at Butler University. During his team's second game of the season, Clark showed up to support McCaffery from the stands. However, in the eyes of the broadcast team, Clark may have overshadowed her friend by coming.

During Butler's loss to Austin Peay on Friday, the Fox College Hoops broadcast showed Clark sitting in the stands. She was named “Caitlin Clark 2024 WNBA Rookie of the Year” on the program’s name card. When the camera then focused on McCaffery courtside, he was identified on a name card as “Connor McCaffery WNBA ROTY Caitlin Clark's Boyfriend.”

But the show even had to include McCaffery's little brother in the ruse.

After disrespecting McCaffery's title, his brother Patrick McCaffery, who is a player on Butler's team, was shown a name card that read “Patrick McCaffery WNBA ROTY Caitlin Clark's friend's brother.”

The program did this with the player on a night where he had 23 points and eight rebounds. Patrick is in his sixth collegiate season and his first at Butler after transferring from Iowa, where both Clark and Connor played. Connor's other younger brother, Jack McCaffery, is also on the team as a freshman.

The show's disregard for the McCafferys and their positions in favor of a connection between them and Clark sparked mixed reactions on social media.

“Bad work,” one user wrote about the show’s machinations.

Another user wrote: “No they did Patrick dirty.”

Meanwhile, a more frustrated user complained: “Honestly, it's really scary to keep trying to get attention with your name.”

Connor played 166 games at Iowa, which ranks second in Iowa history. He struggled with injuries for most of his college career, but a redshirt year and the COVID-19 campaign gave him six seasons. With the exception of his COVID season, he reached the NCAA Tournament in each of his full seasons. He averaged 4.5 points and 3.0 rebounds and had 111 wins, tying Jordan Bohannon for the most wins in program history. His career assist-to-turnover ratio of 3.59 (527 assists to 147 turnovers) is the second-best in NCAA history.

It was also at Iowa that McCaffery met Clark when she played for the women's team from 2020-24. The couple began dating in April 2023 after Clark led Iowa on its way to the NCAA title game. But McCaffery was already in his senior year at the time and began his coaching career right after graduation.

In May of the same year, he began his career as an assistant coach with the Indiana Pacers. McCaffrey got a job at Indiana before Clark even knew she would play for the Indiana Fever. Luckily, the Fever finished last season with such a poor record that they secured the No. 1 pick in the WNBA draft lottery that year, which also sent Clark to Indiana.

Even with McCaffery's new job, the Butler campus would now be just seven miles from the Fever arena, Gainbridge Field House. So their fates will remain together in Indianapolis for the time being.

The couple celebrated their first anniversary on April 24, 2024, according to an Instagram post from Connor that day.

“A year [with] the best in life [with] [you] It was easy and you never cease to amaze me. I can't wait to watch it [you] Live out your dreams in person, love yourself,” he wrote in the caption.

On August 10, during the WNBA Olympics break, the couple traveled to New York City to watch a Yankees game. However, only Clark was seen receiving a tour of the Yankees' clubhouse, and only Clark was seen taking photos with star players Aaron Judge, Anthony Rizzo and Juan Soto.
