According to news reports, the ship was hit by a squall – a sudden storm with sharp and persistent winds. This caused the ship to tip over into the water off the coast of Africa.

According to Cruise Hive, the incident occurred on November 7 on Royal Caribbean's Explorer of the Seas. Hurricane-force winds caused the 137,308-gross-ton ship to tip onto its side, causing chaos on board.

Dramatic footage that has gone viral online shows chaos unfolding aboard the ship, with furniture being smashed and passengers struggling to stay upright. Video shows shattered plates and glasses on the floor as crew members tried to calm panicked passengers.
