Cornell sophomore identified in Fall Creek Gorge incident

Cornell University confirmed that the body recovered Sunday in the Fall Creek ravine near the Stewart Avenue bridge was that of Winter Knutson, a second-year mathematics and physics student from Ithaca.

Vice President for Student and Campus Life Ryan Lombardi updated students Monday, calling it “a very difficult time for our campus community.” A graduate of Ithaca High School, Knutson was known for his academic passion and contributions to school math and brain teams.

The rescue came hours after another student was independently rescued in a separate part of the gorge.

Support services are available, including walk-ins at Student Support & Advocacy in Willard Straight Hall, counseling and psychological services, and the SHARE office for confidential support. A community support meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, November 12th at Goldwin Smith Hall.
