High risk of further wildfires for most of New York State

A fire in the region that destroyed 5,000 hectares was only 20 percent contained. Officials warn that the risk of further wildfires is high starting today.

The red flag warning was issued for the Hudson Valley, the Capital Region, Long Island and New York City.

“A lack of rainfall has recently increased the risk of bushfires and forest fires in New York. During this time, fires spread more easily and wind can spread the fire more quickly,” explains the National Weather Service.

Albany, Schenectady, Columbia, Rensselaer, Sullivan, Dutchess, Ulster, Greene, Delaware, Schoharie and Montgomery Counties

The red flag warning is in effect for these counties from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday

“A red flag warning means that critical fire weather conditions are occurring either now or soon. A combination of strong winds, low relative humidity and warm temperatures may contribute to extreme fire behavior,” the National Weather Service said.

The red flag warning is also in effect on Tuesday from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m

“Any fire that develops will catch and spread quickly. Outdoor burning is not recommended,” the NWS wrote.

The Jennings Creek wildfire on the New York-New Jersey border is still out of control. Officials say the fire was only 20 percent contained as of Tuesday morning and had spread to about 5,000 acres.

The fire has so far resulted in the death of an 18-year-old firefighter in Orange County.

There are concerns that forecast windy conditions could make fighting the fire difficult. Wind gusts of up to 30 to 40 miles per hour are expected Tuesday.
