Driver in China kills 35 people in deliberate attack

Dozens of athletes were killed and 43 others were injured after a man drove a small SUV into a large group of people outside a sports center in Zhuhai, China, on Monday evening.

The 62-year-old suspect, identified by police only by his surname Fan, was upset about his divorce agreement, authorities said. He was arrested at the scene by police after he allegedly killed 35 people and tried to escape at 7:48 p.m.

The southern Chinese city of Zhuhai is hosting the People's Liberation Army's annual aviation exhibition, which opened on Tuesday. The sports facility is regularly used by hundreds of residents for running, playing football or dancing.

Chinese authorities appeared to tightly control information about the incident. Internet censors tend to pay particular attention to cleaning up social media before and during major events such as the aviation exhibition or the annual session of the National People's Congress.

Almost 24 hours after the attack, it was unclear what the death toll or injury toll was. On Tuesday morning, a search on Chinese social media platform Weibo for the sports center yielded only a few posts, only some of which referred to the fact that something had happened, with no pictures or details. Chinese media articles on Monday evening about the incident have been removed.

Searching for what happened was heavily censored for users behind China's Great Firewall. Outside of the controls, however, videos circulated on the social media platform X. In several posts, dozens of people could be seen lying on the running track at the sports facility.
