ESPN Insider Lists Phillies All-Star “On Trade Block.”

ESPN's Jeff Passan wrote an offseason notebook describing Alec Bohm as “on the trading block” –

Alec Bohm, third baseman: The 28-year-old Bohm is coming off the best season of his career and still finds himself on the trade block. While he was a well-above-average hitter — .280/.332/.448 with 61 extra-base hits — his OPS was nearly 150 points higher in the first half than it was in the second half, and the Phillies are looking to shake up their team after one disappointing postseason exit at the hands of the Mets.

Bohm's name has been mentioned a few times since the Phillies' disappointing loss to the Mets in the National League Division Series. As Passan says in his story, Bohm's decline in production over the course of the season has led to this point, and now the Phillies face a difficult decision.

Some fans have encountered recency bias toward Bohm, but that's not unwarranted. He was subbed in Game 3 of the NLDS due to his lack of production at the plate and his behavior on the field. The 28-year-old returned to his former young self under the bright lights this season. The defense, offense and attitude were all not good enough for a player who had only started playing in the All-Star Game a few months earlier.

It's also worth noting that Alec Bohm carried the Phillies' lineup for the first month of this season. He slashed .370/.448/.630 in April, had an OPS of .812 in June, and things started to go downhill from there.

The player, who recorded 44 doubles in 2024 and thrived on deep counts, once saw 5 pitches in 4 ABs in the NLDS. Which player will stay?

Why should Bohm be such a sought-after player across the league? Because of his contract. He has two more years of control over the team and will not become an unrestricted free agent until the end of the 2026 season. Bohm made $4 million in 2024, and such production for such a small amount is eye-opening for a team in need of a cornerback.

Alec Bohm is estimated to make around $8 million in 2025 in his second year in arbitration, according to Spotrac. Many teams could use a contact hitter like his. When he's active, he's unstoppable and we've seen that. But the lows are low. How many teams would be willing to take that risk?

The Phillies could use Bohm as a centerpiece and prospect in exchange for a reliever. Devin Williams and Ryan Helsley are the two big names on the trading block that could be traded this offseason. Williams is a proven 6-year veteran who posted a 1.25 ERA in 21.2 innings last season, as well as a 1.53 ERA in 2023 and a 1.93 ERA in 2022. Ryan Helsley has made 82 saves since the start of the 2022 season, and his ERA has not topped 2.50 since 2021.

There are rumors that the Cardinals may sign Nolan Arenado this offseason, while the Brewers don't necessarily have a third baseman of the future. Joey Ortiz hauled in 412 ABs for the Brewers at third base, posting a .235 average with a .712 OPS. The need exists for both teams.
