Accused Killer of Kentucky Rep. Sentenced to Maximum Penalty for NKY Crimes

The video above is from FOX19 NOW's previous reporting.

KENTON COUNTY, Ky. (WXIX) — A Kentucky man accused of killing a sheriff's deputy in Scott County was convicted Tuesday of a separate crime he committed in Fort Mitchell.

A Kenton County District Court judge sentenced Steven Sheangshang to a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison after he pleaded guilty to burglary and being a persistent offender, according to the Kenton County District Attorney's Office.

FOX19 NOW previously reported that on May 17, 2023, Sheangshang was caught on video stealing a portable generator from a home on Fortside Drive.

At this point, investigators didn't know who the burglar in the video was.

A few days after the break-in, Scott County Deputy Caleb Conley was shot and killed on May 22, 2023, during a traffic stop on Interstate 75 outside Lexington, Kentucky.

Sheangshang was identified as the suspect, the Fayette County Detention Center previously reported.

According to police, Sheangshang later drove away, shot another man and stole his vehicle.

He was arrested in Lexington and his photo spread across the Internet.

“Mr. Sheangshang's photo first appeared in the media in connection with the Scott County shooting,” Kenton County Commonwealth's Attorney Rob Sanders told FOX19 NOW in May. “We determined that he was also associated with the video of the burglar at Fort Mitchell.”

During Sanders' interview, he told FOX19 NOW that it's not entirely known why Sheangshang is in Northern Kentucky in the first place.

Sanders explained what he saw on the security video:

  • A person pulling into the driveway of the home in Fort Mitchell on May 17, 2023
  • The person then went into the garage and came out with a generator

The commonwealth's attorney added that an investigation later revealed that Sheangshang had pawned the generator immediately after stealing it.

Court records show Sheangshang has a long list of criminal charges across the state.
