The Hammond baker goes viral with a video post about a customer who blocked a $77 cake order

HAMMOND, La. (WVUE) – Batter, a boutique bakery in the heart of downtown Hammond, has a knack for going viral on social media.

This time, store owner Abi Caswell took to TikTok to ask why a customer had upset her with a large bill she racked up.

Caswell said that in late August, a customer ordered a $77 custom-made cake in a hurry and never showed up to pay or pick it up.

“I just want to know why,” Caswell said in the video, which has more than 7 million views and 14,000 comments.

She went on to say that the day the cake was supposed to be picked up, the customer called and said it was “too expensive,” even though he had already paid a $25 deposit.

Caswell said she then changed the custom design of the cake to lower the price and help the customer halfway through.

“She called my store and asked, 'Is the cake ready?' “I just want to make sure it’s fully decorated,” she said.

But despite multiple attempts to contact the store, the customer never showed up. Caswell said that one time even the customer's husband answered the phone and immediately hung up.

“I'm glad I shared this because it was an authentic experience for me,” she said. “Many small business owners have had such experiences and are unable to express an opinion out of fear.”

Batter has a strong social media presence online and Caswell has shared examples of strange interactions with customers in the past. Typically, the store goes viral from time to time for its unique, custom-made cakes, pastries, and cookies.

Batter plans to open a second location on Baronne Street in the New Orleans Central Business District in the near future.
