Bears players reportedly want HC Matt Eberflus to bench Caleb Williams

The Chicago Bears started the season promisingly. Behind rookie quarterback Caleb Williams, the team went 4-2 in the first six games. However, the last three games have resulted in a decline in the dressing room.

More news: The Bears are making massive changes by firing coach to help rebound season

The Bears are currently on a three-game losing streak and Bears head coach Matt Eberflus announced that big changes would be made to help the team rebound. Eberflus did not initially announce what the changes were, but a change was finally reported this morning.

Offensive coordinator Shane Waldron was relieved of his duties and passing game coordinator Thomas Brown was promoted to the position. While the move may have come out of nowhere, it was reportedly the players who approached Eberflus and Bears general manager Ryan Poles about making the move.

Worse still, there are experienced players who have also asked for Williams to be benched for Tyson Bagent.

ESPN's Waddle and Silvy report: “After speaking with a few people who knew about the situation, the players reached out to Matt Eberflus and Ryan Poles and asked them to make a change at offensive coordinator. There were also a few experienced players requesting Bagent's starts.”

Although the players who expressed these concerns remain anonymous, their request to remove Waldron from the offensive coordinator position was approved.

Eberflus didn't allow the second concern to arise as he stated on Monday that Willaims would remain in the starting lineup for the time being. It's hard not to understand why players would want him benched considering his regression from the first six weeks of the season to the last three.

In Weeks 1 through 6, Williams threw for 1,317 yards, nine touchdowns and five interceptions. He has thrown for just 468 yards in the last three games. While the rookie quarterback once showed brilliant talent, he has been stymied in the Bears' last three games.

After all, Williams is still a rookie and should be given the opportunity to develop further as a player. However, the Bears are losing ground in the NFC and could be out of a playoff spot if they continue to lose games.

The hope is that Brown can help revitalize an offense that seemed dynamic in the first quarter of the season. If that doesn't happen and Williams continues to struggle, the organization may need to explore sitting out the rookie for the remainder of 2024.

This is just speculation, but the bears seem to be in panic mode at the moment.
