As a new father of two, John Mulaney is committed to staying sober with the help of his wife Olivia Munn.

In the GQ “Men of the Year” cover story with the 42-year-old comedian, published online Tuesday, Mulaney and Munn shared some details about their family of four and what it took to get to a place where Mulaney says he's “having the best time.” in life.”

Although Mulaney's star-studded intervention starring Fred Armisen, Nick Kroll, Natasha Lyonne and Seth Meyers has become folklore, Munn spoke in the GQ piece about her role in Mulaney's journey to sobriety.

Munn told GQ she staged an intervention for Mulaney when she was six months pregnant with her nearly three-year-old son, Malcolm Hiệp Mulaney. Together, the couple decided that she would conduct random drug testing – a practice they still do, which boosts Mulaney's confidence.

“It’s like a relief,” Mulaney said. “I like that this question doesn't matter to her or anyone else. Peeing in this cup is like saying: I'm going this way. That gives me confidence.”

Mulaney was in rehab from December 2020 to February 2021, thanks in part to the intervention of his friends, with an addiction to cocaine, Adderall, Xanax, Klonopin and Percocet. The Emmy-winning “Baby J” comedian would be celebrating his fourth year of sobriety next month, and he has been asked to participate in several interventions for other people, he told GQ.

“It was like watching a man in a tsunami,” Munn said of her partner’s recovery from addiction. “I was watching someone newly sober on the edge of a cliff, and I didn’t know him well enough to help him.”

“In my head I’m like, I don’t really know what’s happening to this guy. It feels pretty shaky,” she says. “But then I saw him at the Troubadour and thought, ‘Man, he’s on fire. He's just phenomenal.' “

Expecting a baby boy was a bright spot for Mulaney during this time, Munn said: “It's the one thing that made him seem light and happy. I remember he was really excited to tell his parents.”

Olivia Munn barely knew John Mulaney when she was pregnant with her first child

Years after first meeting at Meyers' wedding in 2013, Munn and Mulaney reunited in 2021 as Mulaney searched for leads on an apartment in New York after leaving rehab.

“It wasn't anything like 'dating,'” Munn told GQ. “I barely knew him.”

When they found out Munn was pregnant, she assumed they would be caring for their son together: “It wasn't necessarily 'We're going to get married and live together' or anything like that, but 'I'm going to be involved' in some way ” she said. Two months before Malcolm was born, the two decided to raise him together.

The couple reportedly had a wedding in July and welcomed their first daughter, Méi June Mulaney, via a surrogate on September 14. Munn has spoken in several interviews this year about her private battle with breast cancer, which began with a lifelong risk of breast cancer coming back at a high rate and escalated when an MRI revealed an early form of breast cancer, which was confirmed by a biopsy .

Munn then underwent a double mastectomy and a hysterectomy.

Next up for Mulaney is a five-week run on the Broadway show “All In: Comedy About Love” in December, then a live Netflix show building on the six-night talk show “Everybody's in LA” he hosted this summer The career opportunity comes after two requests to host “The Daily Show” and an offer to host next year's Academy Awards, according to GQ.
