The murder of a Lansing teenager stems from an incident involving a woman

LANSING — The fatal shooting of a teenager last week in north Lansing stemmed from an argument with a woman, police said in a court document.

Braylon Shepherd, 18, was fatally shot the night of Nov. 7 after he went to an apartment on Sadie Court because he believed the mother of his child was spending time with another man, a detective said in an affidavit , which was filed in 54A District Court. The residence was located in the area of North Grand River Avenue and North Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.

Shepherd saw the woman exit Xavian Soto's vehicle and get into her own vehicle. He then blocked her car, the investigator said. Shepherd then ran to the woman's vehicle door and began attacking her, the document states.

After some time, as Shepherd returned to his vehicle, Soto exited his vehicle with a gun in his hand and fired numerous shots into the passenger side of Shepherd's vehicle, striking Shepherd in the head, the detective said.

“Shepherd’s vehicle then accelerated forward, striking numerous vehicles in the parking lot,” the document states.

The incident was caught on cameras at the apartment and Soto was arrested in Albion “as a result of phone calls and a search warrant for the apartment,” he said.

Soto, 19, is charged with open murder, carrying a concealed weapon and possession of a firearm. He was held without bail pending further hearings in the case. Court records show he pleaded not guilty during his arraignment hearing Saturday.

No attorney was listed for Soto in court records. A hearing to decide whether he should stand trial on the charges is tentatively scheduled for November 27.
