When Cassandra is sitting in the back of the ambulance in episode 5, “A Touch of Panic”, Karl asks her what she wants for dinner and she says whatever is on the hospital menu. Karl offers her some dinner at her favorite restaurant, but Cassandra politely declines. Her behavior towards Karl is a noticeable change. It's not the first time the couple has felt tension during an episode. However, they always reconcile with a meal or a date at the end of the episode. The red letter of the relationship was that the librarian rejected Karl's gesture and then burst into tears as he left.

The final blow of the romance comes at the end Murder in a small town Episode 6, “The Madness Method.” As Karl and his police investigate the case of a suspected sociopathic murderer, Sid (Aaron Douglas) calls Cassandra to the station to get her testimony about what happened to Murphy, which implicates her in the episode despite her needing space. When the case is over, Cassandra stands on Karl's porch. She mourns her relationship and Karl understands that Cassandra is upset and finally says that they can take a step back. However, Cassandra insists that this is not possible, implying that it is over between them.
