College Football Playoff Rankings: Georgia is out of the rankings while Oregon, Ohio State remains at the top

Georgia plummeted from No. 3 to No. 12 in the current College Football Playoff rankings on Tuesday after losing to Ole Miss 28-10, its second loss of the season, while previously undefeated Miami fell from place 4 fell to No. 9 to Georgia Tech.

If the season ended today, the 7-2 Bulldogs would be the first team eliminated from the bracket, as No. 13 Boise State would automatically claim a spot as the fifth conference champion.

“Their offense wasn't consistent and they struggled with some turnovers,” committee chairman Warde Manuel said of Georgia. “Their defense was solid, although they were on the field quite a bit in the loss to Ole Miss as their offense struggled.”

Oregon and Ohio State remained at the top of the rankings, while Texas, Penn State and undefeated Indiana rose behind them, giving the Big Ten four of the top five teams.

Undefeated BYU jumped from No. 9 to No. 6 after its dramatic win over rival Utah late Saturday. Tennessee remained at No. 7 while Notre Dame moved from No. 10 to No. 8.

Alabama, which had a blowout win at LSU, moved up one spot from No. 11 to No. 10, while Ole Miss moved from No. 16 to No. 11. The Rebels would finish last overall this season ended today.

Manuel said the fact that Alabama and Ole Miss Georgia both beat Georgia in head-to-head games contributed to the Dawgs falling so far behind.

Is Georgia in trouble?

While Dawgs fans may be freaking out about being left out of this week's hypothetical group, Georgia will move right back up if it beats seventh-ranked Tennessee at home this week. It would be Georgia's second top-10 win this season (it previously beat No. 3 Texas), and the two losses came to the committee's No. 9 (Alabama) and No. 10 (Ole Miss) teams.

But the Dawgs wouldn't be out of the woods yet. They finish with Georgia Tech, which beat Miami last weekend. Barring any upsets elsewhere, Georgia probably can't afford a third loss unless it comes in the SEC Championship Game.

Can BYU breathe easier?

BYU, then 8-0, trailed five Big Ten and SEC teams last week with just one loss each. With Miami and Georgia out, the Cougars gained ground and now have some breathing room if they lose in the Big 12 Championship Game.

But as Georgia discovered, the committee can rush to drop a team at any time. BYU won't really be safe if it doesn't get an automatic berth.

How is the G5 race developing?

Boise State has dropped a spot from last week, but is still the top-ranked Group of Five team and well-positioned to earn one of the five bids reserved for conference champions when the Broncos reach the Mountain West win.

Two teams from the American Athletic Conference are now also represented in the ranking. Undefeated Army is ranked 24th, while Tulane is 8-2 and ranked 25th. The Green Wave, also undefeated in the AAC, plays at Navy and has a chance to earn a spot in the conference title game, but Tulane seems unlikely to make up 12 spots at Boise State unless the Broncos lose once.

Army, which has suffered from poor scheduling so far, has a golden chance to improve its resume when it takes on No. 10 Notre Dame next week.
