Gayle King interrupts Hakeem Jeffries: Election was “not close”

CBS's Gayle King Performance of the minority leader in the House of Representatives Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) during an interview to refute his claim that the 2024 election is “close” Tuesday morning.

King's reality check for Jeffries came after her co-host Tony Doukopil argued that “It's not that Democrats don't have programs and results to point to to say, 'We're helping working families.' But people weren't hearing it.”

Doukopil also suggested that Democrats have a “respect problem” with working-class voters.

“Well, we clearly care about improving the lives of everyday Americans, and that drives everything we do from a policy perspective. But of course we need to figure out how to better connect the policies that we have worked hard to implement under the leadership of President Biden and Vice President Harris. You know: infrastructure, repairing our crumbling bridges, roads and tunnels, creating millions of good-paying union jobs. People come first. That was a policy that actually happened,” Jeffries responded. “But we need to better connect why we do these things and how this will lead to an improvement in the quality of life in every America.”

“It sounds like you're still processing it, but were you stunned last Tuesday night? I'm just curious. “I know the lessons learned and all that, but were you stunned by what happened?” King followed.

“Well, we knew before the election, as Vice President Harris said repeatedly, including at the convention, that this was close and it was going to be close…”

“But it wasn’t close,” King interjected.

“-all the way. I think at the end of the day the popular vote will be close,” Jeffries continued. “I think it was, you know, an Electoral College result that most people on the Democratic side didn't expect because everything fell apart at the presidential level Donald Trump's Direction.”
