John Mulaney says Olivia Munn took random drug tests while pregnant

In the last conversation with GQ about fatherhood and sobriety, John Mulaney recalled a mini-intervention from wife Olivia Munn about six months after her first pregnancy.

The couple agreed that Munn would conduct random drug tests after they learned they were expecting their first child, a son named Malcolm, now two years old – and it's a ritual they still use today. “It’s like a relief,” Mulaney said of the practice. “I like that this question isn't even on her or anyone else's mind. Something about peeing in that cup is like, “I'm going down that path.” It gives me confidence.”

The comedian, who has long been vocal about his struggles with drug addiction, suffered a relapse in late 2020 and entered rehab, a journey he opens up about in his Emmy-winning 2023 Netflix special Baby J At this time he also separated from his long-time wife Anna Marie Tendler and soon after began a relationship with Munn, a move that was heavily scrutinized. “You might think it’s nonsense, but it feels very distant,” he said of that period of tabloid fervor.

Munn and Mulaney welcomed Malcolm in November 2021 after a whirlwind pairing. “It wasn't anything like 'dating,'” Munn said GQ the relationship. “I barely knew him.” When she found out about the pregnancy, “it wasn't necessarily 'We're going to get married and live together' or anything like that, but 'I'm going to be involved in some way,'” she said.

She remembered the time after her partner's rehab: “It was like watching a man in a tsunami. I was watching someone who was sober on the edge of a cliff, and I didn't know him well enough to help him.” The two eventually decided to become parents together and married that summer. In September, they had a second child together, a daughter named Mei, who was born through a surrogate mother.

Mulaney recently returned to Studio 8H as host earlier this month Saturday Night Live He hosted for the sixth time alongside musical guest Chappell Roan. He served as a writer for the series between 2008 and 2013, contributing to a number of memorable sketches and characters, including co-creating Bill Hader's beloved Stefon.

His monologue similarly covered dealing with fatherhood while caring for his own parents, as well as his stint in rehab and the tabloid hype surrounding his relationship with Munn. “In 2020 I was in a drug rehab facility. I was on the phone with my dad and he was very emotional,” Mulaney said in the monologue. “And he was trying to think of something clever to say, and at one point he said, 'I just wish Grandpa was here.'”

Mulaney quipped, “I said, 'Dad, if Grandpa were here he'd be 118 years old and I highly doubt he'd have any good advice for dealing with social media backlash.'
