Recovering addict John Mulaney is subjected to regular drug tests by his wife Olivia Munn

When actress Olivia Munn became pregnant, she admittedly barely knew the father of her future child, comedian John Mulaney. She knew he was committed to co-parenting and that he was a recovering addict just out of rehab, but they lived on the other side of the country and spoke sparingly.

“It wasn't even close to 'dating,'” Munn told GQ about the start of their relationship in 2021. “I barely knew him.” Then she became pregnant and Mulaney expressed his intention to be involved in the child's life. “It wasn't necessarily 'We're going to get married and live together' or anything like that, but 'I'm going to be involved in some way'.”

In September 2020, Mulaney ended up in rehab for drug and cocaine addiction. He and his wife Anna Marie Tendler separated soon after and he suffered a relapse three months later.

“It was like watching a man in a tsunami,” Munn said of her now-husband's journey to quitting after leaving rehab for the second time. “I was watching someone newly sober on the edge of a cliff, and I didn’t know him well enough to help him.”

“In my head I’m like, I don’t really know what’s happening to this guy. It feels pretty shaky,” Munn admitted. “But then I saw him at the Troubadour and thought, ‘Man, he’s on fire. He's just phenomenal.'”

Mulaney told Munn about his fear of a relapse, although the baby news apparently wasn't a factor. “That's the only thing that made him seem light and happy. I remember he was really excited to tell his parents,” Munn shared.

Things changed in the sixth month of Munn's pregnancy when she decided to become more invested in his journey to sobriety and conduct a small intervention of her own. Several celebrity friends staged an intervention before he entered rehab in December 2020.

Together they decided that Munn would have him randomly drug tested, something they maintained throughout their relationship, which became more official two months before their son was born. “It’s like a relief,” Mulaney told the outlet about the drug test. “I like that this question doesn't matter to her or anyone else. Peeing in this cup is like saying: I'm going this way. That gives me confidence.”

As much as Munn was there for Mulaney, you can also say that Mulaney was there for Munn. In 2023, the actress was diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent several surgeries including a double mastectomy and a hysterectomy.

“Without him, it would have felt like climbing an iceberg,” Munn told People magazine in April. “I don’t think he had a moment to himself between being an incredibly hands-on father and driving back and forth to the hospital – it was exhausting [son] Malcolm to the park, let him sleep, drive to Cedars-Sinai, hang out with me, go home, put Malcolm to bed, come back to me. And he did everything with joy.

In addition to their almost three-year-old son Malcom, the couple also has daughter Méi June, whom they gave birth to via surrogate mother in September.
