Men sentenced to prison for killing Stone Mountain trans woman

Davonte Fore and Jaquan Brooks

The two men convicted of killing a transgender woman in Stone Mountain in 2021 were sentenced Wednesday morning by a DeKalb County judge.

Davonte Fore, 26, and Jaquan Brooks, 25, were convicted in October of the murder of Skyler Gilmore, who was shot to death in her Stone Mountain apartment on June 4, 2021.

Investigators used phone records and surveillance video to link Fore and Brooks to the crime. Prosecutors say the two were members of a local gang who ordered them to murder her after it emerged she was with another gang member.

Brooks was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole plus five years for possession, to be served consecutively.

Fore, who is currently a fugitive, was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole, plus 10 years for possession and 5 years for possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, both to be served consecutively.

The men received different sentences because Brooks had no criminal record before the murder. Fore, on the other hand, is a convicted felon.

The two men were sentenced by Judge Nora Polk.

The DeKalb County District Attorney's Office reports that Fore was granted bail in February by DeKalb County Superior Court Judge Nora Polk, despite her objections. He fled in the middle of the trial, possibly traveling to California.

Gilmore's father previously spoke to FOX 5 Atlanta and said, “I personally don't think he should have been out on $25,000 bail for a murder case, but he was, and I understand that, but I hope so. People will get it, and quickly.”

Gilmore's father was also present at the sentencing this morning and read a pre-sentence statement to the court and spoke again with FOX 5 Atlanta.

Anyone with information about Fore's whereabouts is asked to contact the DeKalb County Sheriff's Office Fugitive Unit at 404-298-8132.
