Newsweek reported earlier this week that Russia planned to send 50,000 troops to the Kursk Zone to fight Ukrainian forces there. The troops include newly recruited North Korean soldiers who are supposed to fight alongside the Russians.

The deployment of North Korean soldiers has made it easier for Russia to counter Ukrainian counteroffensives without having to withdraw its troops from other conflict areas, although questions have arisen about whether North Korean troops are well trained or prepared to fight in the region.

According to videos on social media, despite the push for new soldiers and a militaristic renewal, Russia's new attempt to fight Ukraine in the region amounts to a “meat grinder” as military vehicles continue to be sent to the region even as other vehicles are blown up are blown up right in front of them.

The Russian Foreign Ministry was contacted for comment.

Another image of Russian military tanks posted by the X account WarMonitor shows four burned-out tanks, reportedly all in the Kursk region.

WarMonitor said: “The 810th Marine Brigade of the Russian Federation has suffered unimaginable losses in attacks on positions in the Kursk region over the past five days. Newly drafted soldiers were sent to the most dangerous fighting positions in Ukraine. The result can be clearly seen in this picture.” “

The battle is not entirely one-sided, as an X account called “War Researcher” led by a member of the Ukrainian Marine Corps reports: “Very bloody battles are taking place in Kursk Oblast. After a failed attack on the first day of the operation. “The enemy deployed only the bare minimum of AFVs on my flank and in the center.”

Newsweek reported that Russia is working hard to maintain control of the Kursk region before Donald Trump takes office, hoping that a Trump ceasefire will make the region permanently part of land held by Russia under a ceasefire agreement.

Trump promised throughout his campaign to end the war in Ukraine. However, per Newsweek Trump also reportedly recently asked Putin not to escalate the war any further.
