Yellowstone There have been a number of shocking deaths since its premiere – but the latest one came as a surprise even to long-time fans of the violent western drama.

The second half of YellowstoneThe fifth and final season premiered on November 10th. The episode featured Kevin Costner's character John Dutton, who apparently died by suicide.

Luke Grimes, who plays Kayce Dutton in the series, spoke about his on-screen father's fate when he stopped by The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on November 12th.

The actor and musician admitted: “We kind of always knew it was coming. That's how the show was structured, right? It was always the case that it would come to this.”

“But obviously it happened in a way that none of us expected. It's very shocking,” he continued, referring to John Dutton's suspicious death.

“He had terminal cancer when the show started. We always knew… But we couldn't let him go. We needed him close to us,” Grimes explained. In conversation with The Hollywood Reporterhe teased that John's death “is the beginning of the end.” It’s what it does to rocket fuel the season forward.”

Luke Grimes continues Yellowstone's last episode: “It really is perfect”

Since this season of Yellowstone is the last in the series. Jimmy Fallon asked Grimes if he was happy with the ending for Kayce.

“I think it's perfect. Taylor.” [Sheridan, Yellowstone creator] I knew the ending from the beginning,” Grimes told Fallon. “He told me, 'I don't want you to know how it ends, but I know how it ends.' And then when I read it, I thought, 'I'm glad he saved it.'” It is really perfect.

Grimes, in an interview with The Hollywood ReporterHe said the script for the final episode was “so beautiful, so deep. It was so perfect, I thought. I think it ends really perfectly and I can’t imagine it ending any other way now.”

Kevin Costner reacts shockingly Yellowstone Death

Costner left the series after completing the first half of season five. During an interview on SiriusXM The Michael Smerconish ProgramHe said he hadn't seen the Season 5 premiere.

“I didn't see it. “I heard it was a suicide, so I don't want to rush to see it,” he revealed horizon Stern, who also questioned the true cause of death. “Maybe it’s a diversionary tactic. Who knows? They are very good. And they’ll figure it out.”
