KC man charged in connection with overdose death of pregnant woman

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – A Kansas City man has been charged in connection with the overdose death of a pregnant woman after the couple took fentanyl together.

Documents filed Tuesday, November 12, in Jackson County, Missouri, District Court indicate that Joseph Dicapo-Soltero, 32, of Kansas City, has been charged in connection with the overdose death of a pregnant woman.

A probable cause statement filed by the Kansas City, Missouri, Police Department states that shortly before 3:40 a.m. on August 16, emergency crews were called to an area near Westport with reports of a disturbance.

When they arrived, the Kansas City, Missouri, Fire Department arrived and told investigators that they had found an unresponsive woman on a nearby property in the year. She was pronounced dead about 10 minutes later.

Surveillance footage from the area showed that Dicapo-Soltero and the woman were seen sitting on a nearby porch and snorting narcotics around 11:20 p.m. A conversation ensued between the two about fentanyl. Dicapo-Soltero was seen walking away just before the woman fell face-first, where she remained until found by passers-by hours later.

An autopsy on the woman revealed that she had been between 24 and 26 weeks pregnant at the time of her death. The cause of death was determined to be fentanyl and cocaine intoxication.

Police officials said a search warrant was executed at Dicapo-Soltero's home on August 22 and he was taken into custody. His cell phone was also confiscated as evidence.

During an interview with investigators, Dicapo-Soltero told them he knew the dangers of fentanyl and admitted he met the woman and provided her with the deadly drug.

Dicapo-Soltero was charged with first-degree manslaughter and delivery of a controlled substance. If convicted, he faces a maximum of 20 years in prison and a $20,000 fine.

An arrest warrant was issued for Dicapo-Soltero on Tuesday, November 12th, with bail listed at $50,000. As of Wednesday, he does not appear to be behind bars. No hearings have been scheduled yet in the case.
