Oak Bluffs police are charging a 29-year-old New York man with cocaine trafficking after an arrest Friday on Beach Road near the hospital.

David Lee Wells, of the Bronx borough of New York City, was arraigned Tuesday of this week in Edgartown on drug trafficking and new motor vehicle charges. According to Oak Bluffs police, his bail has been revoked and he remains in custody.

Oak Bluffs patrol officers stopped Wells at 11:20 p.m. Friday and discovered that Wells' BMW X3 was missing a headlight. Police also reported that the car's license plate belonged to a Jeep Cherokee and was illegally attached to the BMW.

According to police, Wells ordered an Uber after he was allowed to leave the area. However, after officers searched the interior of the vehicle, they reported finding a clear plastic bag containing a white, powdery substance that was confirmed to be cocaine. Police later reported that the total weight of the powder was 28.5 grams

At this point, Wells was already in the Uber and leaving the scene. Officers reported that they were able to catch up with the vehicle, stop it and re-arrest Wells.

Before his arrest Friday, Wells was arrested in May on another human trafficking charge. Police reported at the time that he was in possession of over 200 grams of cocaine and that his vehicle had an illegal license plate.

According to police reports, Wells was also arrested in June for punching and biting a 61-year-old man in the face on Circuit Avenue in Oak Bluffs. He was arrested at the time for assault and battery on a person over 60 years old.
