FBI investigating 'substance' found in Las Olas high-rise in Fort Lauderdale – NBC 6 South Florida

The FBI is investigating a “substance” found Wednesday at a Fort Lauderdale high-rise law office that led to a major fire rescue operation.

Multiple ambulances responded to the 200 block of E. Las Olas Boulevard after a law firm employee reported encountering some substance in the building, Fort Lauderdale Fire Department officials said.

Fire Chief Stephen Gollan said an employee at the law firm on the 14th floor reported opening an envelope and feeling sick. Believing there was a powder or other threatening substance inside, Gollan called 911, Gollan said.

RAW: On Wednesday morning, a major fire rescue operation was underway at a high-rise building in Fort Lauderdale due to a potentially dangerous situation.

Law firm employees were quarantined in their suites while a hazardous materials investigation was conducted, officials said.

Paramedics treated the woman at the scene and she did not require hospitalization.

Fire officials determined the substance was not harmful and turned the investigation over to the FBI, officials said.

“Any type of potential threat or act of terrorism is always reported to the FBI. Any time a chemical or biological substance could be used, the FBI is immediately notified, and then it's up to them what they want to do with the case,” Gollan said. “Even if there is nothing, even if there is just a threatening letter sent or a potential threatening message, the matter will still be investigated by the FBI.”

Further information was not immediately available.
