“I feel like a sore loser”

Season 12 of “The Masked Singer” continued Wednesday night on FOX, with Group C contestants making their “Who Are You Fest” debut. After the audience vote in the studio, Macaron was the first singer eliminated (and the seventh overall that season), making him a professional surfer and author Bethany Hamilton. Watch our video interview above.

“I sing to my children every day, I have four small children,” Bethany tells Gold Derby. “In my head I was like, 'Oooh, maybe I could sing better. It just looked like a really fun challenge. I’ve always loved challenges.”

The athlete admits he sang “Call Me Maybe.” Carly Rae Jepsen “It doesn't necessarily reflect something I would sing every day, but it was a really fun song.” She also admits that the macaron costume was “so far out of my comfort zone.” She continues: “I live a very simple life when it comes to clothing. When I saw this extravagant costume I had to laugh. It was really fun to wear and it was so unique. We added a little hippie touch because I'm from Hawaii and my parents were hippies when they moved here. I rocked a little bit from the roots.”

Panelists Robin Thicke, Ken JeongAnd Jenny McCarthy Wahlberg suspected it was a surfer Gypsy Rose Blanchard, Monica Lewinskyor Ariana Madix. “I know so little about what's going on out in the world that I have no idea who these people were. I have to say, I thought I would do better. I feel a bit like a poor loser. I thought I could at least do one lap. I thought my performance would pay off. Let's just be honest. My voice isn't my strength, but I thought my performance would take me further. That was a bit rough. I thought, 'What?! What's up? Indignation!'”

At some point it happened Rita Ora who put the clues together and guessed that Macaron was Bethany. “I feel like it's really rare for them to guess someone, so I was a little surprised,” she admits. “In my costume they had a prosthetic arm. You could kind of tell. Maybe that was an important clue for her. She also had a sweet little story, she said: “When I was little in London my mother told me this story.” So maybe it just came to her mind.”

Bethany also reflects on the shark attack she survived in 2003, struggling with life in the public eye and discovering “the beauty of storytelling.”
