CPD data for the current year shows a significant reduction in crime

COLUMBUS, Ga. (WTVM) – Columbus Police have announced a significant decrease in major crime categories for the current annual period from January 1, 2024 to October 24, 2024.

Key reductions include a 29.7% decrease in murders, a 27.2% decrease in robberies, a 22.7% decrease in burglaries and a 16.5% decrease in motor vehicle thefts.

The following table presents the CPD data for the period from January 1, 2024 to October 24, 2024:

In addition to these reductions, the department said it achieved impressive clearance rates that were above the national average. The murder clearance rate is 92%, compared to the national average of 55.5%. The clearance rate for robberies is 34.4%, for burglaries it is 30.7% and for motor vehicle thefts it is 66.7%.

“These numbers reflect not only a decrease in crime, but also our tireless commitment to solving cases,” said Chief Stoney Mathis. “Our clearance rates demonstrate the hard work of our investigators, particularly in cases such as murder, where we are well above the national average. We are not letting up and will continue to work diligently to make Columbus even safer.”
