Teen dies in apparent subway surfing incident in Queens

A teenager has died after an apparent incident while surfing on the subway, the MTA said Thursday.

According to the NYPD, officers responding to the Forest Avenue stop on the M Line in Ridgewood, Queens, shortly before 10 p.m. Wednesday found a 13-year-old boy unconscious and unresponsive.

The boy was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. His identity has not been released.

In a statement, New York City Transit President Demetrius Crichlow called the incident “another heartbreaking situation in which a child tragically mistook riding outside of subway cars for some sort of joyride.”

“I implore anyone who thinks train surfing is a game — and parents, friends and teachers who can convince them otherwise — to understand the deadly risk and ride in,” Crichlow said

This would be the fifth death this year and the 10th in the last two years due to subway surfing.
