National Drug Take Back Day, October 26th

ALBEMARLE COUNTY, VA (NOW CVILLE) – Saturday, October 26, 2024, is National Drug Take Back Day. The Albemarle County Police Department, in collaboration with Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital, Wegmans, Crozet Family Medicine and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), will set up four drop-off locations for National Prescription Drug Take Back Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Drug take-back events are considered the best way to safely dispose of expired and unnecessary prescription medications before they can be misused, abused or accidentally ingested. Unused prescription medications that are thrown in the trash can be retrieved and misused or sold illegally. Meanwhile, flushing prescription medications can harm aquatic life and humans because many of these compounds can leach into drinking water.

All unwanted prescription or over-the-counter medications, vape pens and e-cigarettes are accepted. Medical sharps in a puncture-resistant container (e.g. a detergent bottle) are only accepted at the Sentara location. Please remove all identifying information from medication bottles. Medical waste from commercial organizations will not be accepted. After the event, all medications will be safely destroyed by ACPD and all sharp objects will be handled by Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital.

This service is free and anonymous, no questions asked.
