Filming took place across Australia Northern Territory and South Australia. According to Netflix, many of the locations are “barely inhabited” and have never been seen on screen before.

The main locations include:

  • Kakadu National Park – a World Heritage Site and one of Australia's largest national parks (almost 20,000 square kilometers). Numerous Aboriginal communities still live in the region.
  • Mallala – a small South Australian town located 62 kilometers north of Adelaide.
  • Tipperary Station – a real cattle station. It's so big that it even has its own runway and school.

“It took us a long time to get Tipperary Station on board and this is testament to that.” [show creator] “Ben Davies, who had that relationship because he had worked there before,” said executive producer Rob Gibson (via Perth Now).

He added: “We were both excited by the prospect of making a big-budget, high-stakes action drama set on a cattle ranch in a part of the country not often seen on screen.”

“By car alone it takes 40 minutes from the junction to the station gate. The crossing can take hours, and if you really want to get moving you need a helicopter, which is a necessary part of the station. Life and march.

“Something with such breadth and size is just right [we were] looking to sell the vision of the largest cattle ranch in the world.”

About 140 of the 180 crew members lived on the station in a “camping village” for the first month of filming before moving on to Kakadu and the south.

“It's a huge production effort to create this in such a remote location,” Davies said (via IF).

“This stockyard is unique in the world in terms of infrastructure and size and is therefore fortunate to be able to accommodate our large cast and crew.”

“And with the team based here, we capture remarkably authentic images that, coupled with powerful storytelling, capture the world we want to share, not just locally but also globally.”

Territory, originally called Desert King, is the biggest Netflix series ever filmed in South Australia.

Territory is available to stream on Netflix now – sign up from £4.99 per month. Netflix is also available on Sky Glass and Virgin Media Stream.
