League of Legends has a new playable character, and it's so incredibly powerful that the entire community is cowering in fear – including professional players.

Ambessa is an interesting addition to the League of Legends roster, as she is the first new character to begin her life outside of the game. Ambessa appears in the first season of Arcane as the mother of Piltover Elite Mel Medarda, but will enter Summoner's Rift as a full-fledged League of Legends character with the release of Arcane Season 2 next month. While spin-off strategy game Teamfight Tactics hosted a number of external influences, most notably Silco from Arcane Season 1, none of these have previously been included in the main game.

As the leader of the warlike Noxus Empire, Ambessa is a skilled and aggressive fighter, wielding dual chainaxe weapons and using heavy armor to limit the enemy's incoming damage. If that makes her sound like a tank, you're wrong – Ambessa seems to be a typical example of what League of Legends calls a “juggernaut.” This character archetype can dish out and take a lot of punishment, but should be limited by limited mobility – staying out of range of a Juggernaut will allow you to quickly mitigate any threat it poses.

I say allegedly be held back, but that's not really the case here. Ambessa's passive ability grants her a dash after each active ability cast. In an efficient combination that results in a kind of stickiness that ensures that once Ambessa is near you, it is very difficult to remove. It's not an entirely new tool – sniper Kalista has a small jump that she uses after every single attack, but that's more suited to her glass cannon-style character class. For a warrior like Ambessa, this is quite frightening.

The community's reactions are varied. Some players point out the complexity of Ambessa's abilities compared to those of older champions – while the newcomer gains mobility, attack range, attack damage, and resource replenishment from her passive ability alone, a character like Nasus's version only receives shallow lifesteal from the same ability . Others have noted that this could be the end of the game's 14-year movement creep arc – with one hit to every angle ability, “you can't increase creep mobility any further,” although some players commented in the comments on this one Contributors are prepared to see this as a challenge. My favorite genre of reaction, however, is that of players who simply gave up. I've seen a lot of League of Legends champion releases at this point, so I know how it goes – streamer ioki probably said it best when he acknowledged that “she's guaranteed to be nerfed ten times upon release.” Ambessa will achieve amazingly strong results based on the number of tools in their kit rather than the number behind that kit, and so Riot will have little choice but to reduce that number over and over again until it is no longer viable. It's a fate that has happened to many newcomers and will happen to many more before League of Legends is finished, but Ambessa still seems to be a step beyond what we've seen so far. Given that this comes so soon after another Arcane fumble – the $250 skin gacha system that was unveiled shortly after Riot fired a number of cosmetic designers – it may not be the best community marketing that the studio could have come up with for the upcoming second series.

Arcane Season 2 isn't the end of Riot's animation offensive and fans are already speculating about where we go next in the League of Legends universe.
