Nicole Kidman is holding on after her mother's death

Nicole Kidman is “hanging in there” as she mourns the loss of her mother, Janelle Ann Kidman.

“I wish my mom was here,” said the 57-year-old Oscar winner The Hollywood Reporter at the premiere on Wednesday, October 23rd lioness Season 2 in Los Angeles. “That would be the only thing I would say. Everything is going great at work, but I wish my mom was here.”

On September 7th Baby girl Director Halina Reijn announced at the Venice Film Festival that Kidman – winner of the festival's best actress award – had left the event early due to the death of her mother at the age of 84.

In a statement read by the filmmaker, Kidman praised her “beautiful, courageous mother” and wrote that Janelle “shaped, guided and created me… The collision of life and art is heartbreaking and my heart is broken.” The Australian actress and Producer failed Baby girlPremiering at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 10th.

“It was hard” to deal with the loss, Kidman said THR. “It's a hard road. I’m holding on.”

“Every message we received from those who loved and admired our mother meant more to us than we could ever express,” Kidman and her sister Antonia captioned a series of family photos from the past on Instagram on September 12. “From our entire family, thank you for respecting our privacy and taking care of each other ❤️.”

In November 2023 the Dream couple Star told PEOPLE that her mother was “so interested in what I wore” at industry events. Her mother and grandmother “loved beautiful clothes,” she said at the time. “I watched them sew, embroider, knit and crochet. And I think as a kid, when you see the people in your household doing that, you love it.”

The two-part premiere of the second season of lioness will stream on Paramount+ on Sunday, October 27th. Kidman's other upcoming projects include A24's erotic thriller Baby girl (in theaters December 25), a 1988 sequel Practical magic with Sandra Bullock and Scarpettaa TV adaptation of Patricia Cromwell's books starring Jamie Lee Curtis and Ariana DeBose.
